Soon, it’ll be the time of the year when that familiar itch of “out with the old and in with the new” becomes ever more present.
Yes, spring cleaning.
As you think about how much clearer your head will be as you declutter, remember to think about all the benefits of clearing things out.
So, before throwing away that magenta, chiffon dress you swore you’d wear more than once, consider trying to get a little extra cash out of it.
Poshmark
Selling on Poshmark is easy, but it does take some effort.
As a seller, you’re responsible for photographing the item, writing the description, and setting the price. You’re also responsible for shipping the item. However, Poshmark does send you a prepaid and pre-addressed shipping label.
Women, men, kids, and home décor pieces sell well on the site. Popular brands to sell include Lululemon, Nike, UGG, Gucci, and much more!
Poshmark HQ authenticates items valued at more than $500, and sellers are protected if the buyer doesn’t receive their shipment due to theft or loss.
Poshmark allows you to list your items for free. Once an item sells, Poshmark charges a $2.95 fee for pieces under $15 and 20% for items over $15.
Depop
Want to sell trendier items to younger buyers? Depop is the site for you!
Like Poshmark, selling on Depop takes a little bit of effort. You are responsible for uploading pictures, writing descriptions, pricing, and shipping.
The site allows you to sell both womenswear and menswear. Popular brands to sell on Depop include everything from affordable brands like Aéropostale to luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton.
For more serious sellers, the site allows you to create a virtual storefront with a custom logo and social media!
Listing your items on Depop is free. Once your item sells, Depop charges a 10% fee on the transaction total.
eBay
Arguably one of the originators of customer-to-customer online selling and buying, eBay allows you to sell everything from affordable clothing to luxury accessories and fine jewelry.
eBay authenticates luxury goods and offers seller protection policies.
The site offers two selling options—auctions and Buy It Now. For eBay’s auction option, the highest bidder wins the item. The Buy It Now option allows buyers to purchase the item immediately.
Your first 250 listings on eBay are free, and the site charges $.35 for every listing after that.
Once the item sells, eBay charges 10% to 15% of the final value.
thredUP
You don’t have to worry about putting in much effort when selling on thredUP!
All you have to do is order a shipping kit from the site and fill it with unwanted items. Then, return the kit to thredUP. Their team then handles the listing and selling.
If your item doesn’t sell, you can have it returned or recycled.
Just like the previous sites mentioned, listing on thredUP is free. Several factors can affect your payout—brand, demand, quality, and selling price. You can earn anywhere from 3% to 80%.
The RealReal
Luxury. Luxury. Luxury is what comes to mind when selling or buying on The RealReal.
For those looking to clear out some of their luxury items, this online consignment store is perfect for selling women’s, men’s, and children’s pieces.
Selling your items on the website takes minimal effort. There are three ways of getting your item to The RealReal—team members can pick up the item from your home, you can ship it to their offices, or take it to one of their Luxury Consignment Offices.
Once The RealReal has your items, you can sit back and relax! The RealReal team will evaluate the item for authenticity, photograph it, and list it for you.
The RealReal pays you a commission, depending on the item’s value and how often you sell on the site. For example, as someone under “Trendsetter” status, a sale of $5,000 will make you $3,500. Ultimately, you’ll pocket 20% to 75% in profits.
Clearing out a messy closet can be good for the mind and great for the pockets!
